What is Fast Fashion?

What’s Fast Fashion? 

Fast fashion is a concept that has been gaining more relevance in recent years. It involves a trend adopted by many clothing brands characterized by the rapid production of low-cost garments to satisfy the constant and changing market demand. 

The lifespan of each garment produced is really short. According to a study conducted by the American Apparel and Footwear Associations in the United States, an average consumer purchases approximately eight pairs of shoes and 68 pieces of clothing each year, giving each item a maximum lifespan of three months. Americans throw away an average of 30 kilograms of clothing per year, and this is not about donations to charity, but clothes that go directly to the landfill.

The constant need to stay fashionable not only harms our environment in the long run but also negatively impacts the working conditions of irregular workers who are exploited by large brands.

Impacts of Fast Fashion 

There are plenty of negative impacts of fast fashion, here are some of them: 

Resource Depletion

The fast fashion industry is notorious for its extensive use of natural resources. The production of clothing requires large quantities of water, land, and energy. For instance, it takes about 2,700 liters of water to produce a single cotton t-shirt, considering the water used in growing cotton plants and the manufacturing process.

Pollution

Did you know that fashion is the second most polluting industry after oil? Well, it is. Millions of liters of water are used in garment production, nearly a hundred million trees are cut down, and thousands of pounds of textile waste are burned, emitting greenhouse gasses even more harmful than those from burning coal or natural gas. If fast fashion continues, CO2 emissions are predicted to increase by nearly 50% by 2030 under current trends.

Waste

The rapid turnover of fashion items leads to significant waste. In many cases, people discard clothing after only a few uses, which is where Fast Fashion comes in.

Fast fashion brands are companies that produce clothing quickly and inexpensively to meet the latest trends. Clothes that are trendy, but they won’t last more than one season in our wardrobe. They make their clothes from poor materials, making them cheap and accessible but low quality, leading to a short lifespan. Some fast fashion brands are Shein, Zara, Forever 21, H&M, and more. They usually implement new trends or viral products, produce fast fashion and as soon as you close your eyes, the trend has disappeared and there’s a bunch of garments that go directly to disposal. 

Exploitation of Labor

The fast fashion industry often relies on cheap labor in developing countries, where workers face poor working conditions, low wages, and insufficient labor rights. This human cost adds another layer to the ethical concerns surrounding fast fashion.

So yes, big fashion companies have forgotten not only the environment but also workers’ rights.
