Winter is an absolutely delightful season, filled with fun things like the Holidays, cozy sweaters, and hot cocoa. However, winter also brings with it some challenges and one of the most common complaints during this season is chapped and dry lips. It might take a little extra work, but you can still have soft lips in winter by following simple steps.
Remember to hydrate
One of the most common causes of chapped lips during the winter is dehydration. Cold, dry air can sap moisture from your skin, including your lips. To combat this, it’s essential to stay well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin —and lips— properly moisturized from the inside out.
Use a quality lip balm
Invest in a good quality lip balm that contains hydrating ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, or cocoa butter. Apply it liberally throughout the day to create a protective barrier against the harsh winter winds and lock in moisture. Keep a lip balm in your purse, pocket, or desk so you can reapply as needed.
Avoid licking your lips
It’s a common habit to lick your lips when they feel dry, but this can actually make the problem worse. Saliva contains enzymes that can break down the skin on your lips, leading to even more dryness and chapping. Instead of licking your lips, reach for your lip balm.
Cover your mouth when you’re outdoors
If you’re planning to spend extended time outdoors during the winter, especially in windy or snowy conditions, consider covering your lips with a scarf or a high collar. This will help shield them from the harsh elements and prevent moisture loss.
Humidify your environment
Indoor heating systems can make the air inside your home incredibly dry, which can contribute to dry lips. Consider using a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your living spaces. You can find some cheap options online!
Be careful with matte lipsticks
While matte lipsticks can look amazing, they tend to be more drying than other types of lip products. During the winter, consider using moisturizing lipsticks, lip stains, or lip glosses that provide color while also protecting and moisturizing your mouth.
